Building Health for the Community
A series featuring local health practitioners sharing informative and thought-provoking insights on health and wellness. The talks were originally part of a speaking series sponsored by Driftless United for Health Freedom in early 2022, at The Commons in Viroqua.
The recent cultural events have truly been traumatic for all people. Mindfulness skills are tools to overcome these wounds and patterns that could become deeply ingrained if not processed properly. In this talk, you’ll learn some basic mindfulness skills, and how utilizing them can help regulate the nervous system, improve the immune system and help with decision-making.
We are whole and also a larger and larger circles of wholeness. Prudence Tippins discusses how emotional healing is enhanced by a systemic perspective, and how the systems we are a part of benefit from our emotional healing. From a young age, Prudence has been holding the question, “How can we help each other to remember our connectedness?” This talk reflects her current thinking on the matter, informed by her education and experience as a licensed marriage and family therapist, and she is eager to gather answers from those in attendance to add to the ongoing conversation.
Christina Derocher was born in the late 70’s, reared on the Standard American Diet. At 19, a boy from poetry class asked her on a date and brought his own lunch! She discovered love and macrobiotics, and didn’t look back for nearly 25 years… until perimenopause revealed a deep depletion. This is a story of letting go of deeply held notions of health, and finding a path to well… it’s not what you think it is!
The modern diet – even the so-called healthy ones – are missing some key foods and nutrients that were present in traditional diets. In this talk, we will explore some of those missing foods and why focusing on what to add to the diet is more important than what to take out. This talk will be presented by Laura Poe Mathes, a registered dietitian in private practice in Viroqua. Her specialty is on gut health, with a focus on ancestral diet and lifestyle principles. She also teaches workshops on traditional food preparation, including fermentation and cooking with the whole animal.
Joshua Estep is a local nurse who provides wellness coaching and client advocacy services through his business, Womb to Tomb Wellness, LLC. He works to help people optimize their wellbeing and prevent, reverse or better manage the root causes of many chronic diseases.
Joshua received his BS in Kinesiology Exercise & Movement Science from UW Madison, and his BSN from UW Oshkosh’s Accelerated BS to BSN program.
In this talk, Joshua focuses on understanding some of the most impactful root causes of chronic mental and physical health issues, and what simple lifestyle ‘hacks’ can do to address them and restore vitality to life.
Recently retired after 35 years in family practice, Dr. Paul Bergquist earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota in 1986 and completed a residency in family medicine in St. Paul, MN. His practice included acupuncture, botanical medicine, homeopathy, functional medicine, shamanism, and art therapy, in addition to regular allopathic medical practice. In this talk, Dr. Bergquist discusses preventing disease and building health with integrative medicine techniques, emphasizing naturopathic approaches.
Learning to use the power of the subconscious mind isn’t just useful – it’s fun! Humans have the ability to tap into creativity and inspiration, to states of consciousness where physical, mental, emotional and spiritual healing can take place, and even to create radical transformation in what appears to be reality. Health and harmony begin with the mind. Let’s journey into the realm of consciousness where our minds play with frequency, vibration and resonance.
Dr. Paul Grenier has been a chiropractor for 30+ years and has come to realize that practicing chiropractic deals with more than just the physical release (adjustment) of the nervous system. A person’s outlook, attitude and basic beliefs on health have just as much input with how one experiences wellness on this planet. In other words, how a person believes, thinks and acts will have a significant impact on the expression of their health. Consciousness on a personal health and wellness level does matter.
