Everything is broken. The world is in shambles. We are a mess.

And if I believed that as the ULTIMATE truth, you would need to get another Astrologer!

“Everything is broken” is definitely a major chapter in the first section of this book of being a human, but it is not the whole book. It is not the whole story. And definitely NOT the conclusion.

But our awareness of what’s wrong must be functional and operable if we are ever to make it right.

The season of Virgo comes as a necessary response to the jubilant season of Leo. In Leo, we celebrate the glory of the ripening sunflowers and tomatoes. We celebrate life. Sometimes that can devolve into egocentric pleasure seeking. At its worst, a child king can rule with impunity and a complete lack of chivalry. Ultimately, we learn through Leo about the joy of being a human. Virgo makes sure that that human can survive through winter! Virgo harvests and preserves the tomato for food and seed. Thanks, Virgo.

So, we celebrate the season of Virgo, the season of the harvest, as that one season of the year dedicated to getting real, getting organized, discriminating between what works and what doesn’t, and making sure everything is in order from wherever we have been, so that wherever we are going can occur effectively.

“We can do it from ARGH or we can do it from AHHH. Either way, we have to do it.” -Ram Das

This is the first of two consecutive New Virgo Moons. In a month we will have a Blue New Moon, giving us TWO lunar cycles to perfect the art of being Virgo; of being a functional, effective, and healthy human.

Here are some easy-to-follow methodologies for maximizing our continued human existence and for reconciling and integrating what darknesses or challenges we have heretofore faced in our lives…

1) Leave the past where it is. We are here now. Deal with what is in front, not behind.  Honor the fact that even our greatest tragedies have led us to this moment. In this moment, we are alive. Celebrate! We’ve made it through what we thought we couldn’t! The present is where the power is. Don’t give that power to the past with shame or regret.  While it’s understandable, it doesn’t help. We are humans doing the best we can with what we have. Sweep your own steps and at least your own home will be clean.

2) The most powerful thing you can do is exercise your power of right action through moment-to-moment choice. Emotional desires will always arise. We are human. Emotions are necessary. But acting from fear, sorrow, or anger is not always the most effective long-term choice. Choosing actions in accordance with our higher principles and morals, coupled with strategic calculations based on wise observation of the available information, encourages healthier lives. Do your best.

3) Take care of your crap. The piles in the corner of the desk or in the basement need to be dealt with. Have a garage sale or make a donation. Taking care of responsibilities in a timely manner and clearing the clutter, lightens our burdens and provides us with more freedom. That’s going to be important in the coming months. Get stuff taken care of now so it’s not hanging over us when we need to focus on other things. (Cue: Ominous music.)

4) Take care of your body. If that really is an alien ship approaching, and they’re not friendly, we might need to boogie. If they are friendly and we want to go travel the stars, they might ask for the healthiest. That’s only a couple of reasons to increase cardio. I’m sure you could think of some other reasons to take care of your body that I don’t have to make up a little story about.

5) Understand, accept, and integrate the realities of this three-dimensional world. We all have dreams. Many of us want to win the lottery and relax with freedom from the insanity of the world on our own private beach. However, there is no escape. Jim said that no one here gets out alive. Neither alcohol nor streaming video will take us away from the realities of this existence. Turn to face them, deal with them, and it will inevitably feel as good as a sparkly, clean kitchen does once the dishes are done.

With this New Virgo Moon, let’s set an intention for embodying the aforementioned suggestions. In a couple of months, we will look back at this time and either be very grateful for the effort we gave or wish we would have given more. Choose wisely, and all will be well.
