We are on Tern Island in the French Frigate Shoals of the Hawaiian Island western chain of atolls; reading Eye of the Albatross by Carl Safina. Understanding the feather moult patterns of albatrosses is essential for researchers to understand their lifetime reproductive potential, as these huge birds have to take a complete year off from breeding to have enough energy to replace their feathers. We hear about moult in birds today and then linger looking up at the night’s starry sky after a beautiful day keeping up with the biologists and their work.
