We will hear the story of the beautiful huge Short-tailed Albatross whose north Pacific range extends from the eastern Pacific around the islands of Taiwan and Japan all the way north to the Aleutians and south along the west coast of NA down to the Baja Peninsula. Their population plunged from millions to just 50 individuals because of the vicious and efficient slaughter of the feather trade. This marvelous bird has returned from near extinction, due largely to the efforts of one man, Dr Hiroshi Hasegawa. We will also hear about the travels and exploits of Georg Stellar (the steller’s jay, the steller’s sea cow, stellar’s sea eagle, stellar’s eider) and Vitus Bering (the Bering Sea) and lots more today.
