Another trip to the remote Pacific; Tern Island, part of the French Frigate Shoals, part of the western Hawaiian islands, where thousands of pelagic birds breed. I’m reading Eye of the Albatross by Carl Safina. We fly off for hundreds of miles, with Amelia, a Laysan albatross, to find food for her chick, food that is found with her keen sense of smell; an unusual sense, to say the least, in birds. I will also briefly discuss the earthquake and tsunami of July 29th 2025 and its effect on these low lying atolls that are so vital to these birds.
